Sign Wednesday: The T-shirt

Some of the hardest things about any special event are the questions, "Well how many t-shirts should we order?" & "What should the t-shirts look like?" I'm not joking when I say this either. I have done many special events and there seems to be more controversy over who gets a t-shirt, who has to pay for the t-shirt, and what the t-shirt looks like than even who is in what group or breakout. I really am amazed by this phenomenon.

How do I solve this ever important controversy? Simple. Design a t-shirt that makes a lot of noise or makes you look at it at least once. Then order to many of them and give them away to anyone who is willing to wear it.

Do I have a good example of what I mean? Sure. Tie dye is a good choice to be loud and make people notice. It's not the only way but it is one way. Here is our camp shirt this year.



How do I afford it? I know going into the event that I'm going to order more t-shirts than I need so I factor that into the cost.

Why wouldn't you want people wearing the t-shirt for your event? It truly is one of the best walking around signs that you can have. If you are going to have a sign, why not make it noticeable? You want people to read it right?

This year, if you haven't ordered your t-shirt yet please remember these rules:

1. I want people to notice the shirt
2. I want people to wear the shirt who don't mind being noticed. These people talk more.
3. I will give away as many as I can.

Ministry Monday: It's time for NEW

Have you ever tried to do something new? Whether it was a new game to play or a new skill to learn, it seems to change you in some way. Whether you liked the new thing or not it changes your perspective. It makes you look at things a little bit differently. I am a firm believer that things need to be new or they will go unnoticed. This weekend was our weekend of NEW.

This past weekend was one of those times that we thought we would try some new things. We started a new ministry for 5th/6th graders called Freedom 56. It was in a new location. With a new setup that we had never done before. It had a new computer, screen, and sound system. We also started a new curriculum for them called Grapple from Group Publishing. We also had a new check-in station for these kids as well. Now if that was not enough new things we thought we would also pile onto that a new series in elementary, new classroom age breakdowns, promotion of all grades, new check-in computers, a new set for elementary and Jr. High, and a new curriculum for all of elementary called BIG by Hillsong Kids.

Here is what I say... If you are going to change something why not just go ahead and change most things?

When was the last time you changed something at your church, business, or organization? When you make something new people notice. It changes their perspective. New makes it to where people are willing to be moved in a different direction. What else could you ask for as a church, business, or organization?

New doesn't happen easy. It takes a lot of time, effort, and a little bit of sweat. In the end though, it is well worth. I think it's time for NEW.

Ministry Monday: Horizon Highlight part 1

I have noticed over the past 4 years that I haven't highlighted to many things about the church that I get to be apart of each week. So I thought that I would do a series of posts that highlight some great things about Horizon Community Church.

What are the values of your church? Do you know them or have you even heard them? Here are ours and feel free to use them as yours if you don't have any or don't know if you do. They are good.

Horizon's Values

Culturally Relevant. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
(1 Corinthians 9:22)

Comfortable Environment. And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” (John 1:46)

Excellence. Sing to Him a new song, play skillfully with a shout of joy. (Psalm 33:3)

Family. Then Crispus… believed on the Lord with all his household. (Acts 18:8)

Challenging Bible Teaching. For the word of God is living and powerful…and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

Everybody Helping Out. So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them. (Romans 12:5-6)

Transformed Lives. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2)

Multiplication. Then the word of God spread, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly. (Acts 6:7)

Tech Thursday: Wii Whiteboard meets Cooliris

Today we played around with the concept of the Wii Whiteboard. Johnny Chung Lee who is a genius was the first person that I heard of that was doing the Wii Whiteboard. The idea is to have an interactive Whiteboard that can be projected on any wall or surface. Here is his video explanation.



I told you that the guy was a genius and this application of 2 Wii remotes is incredible.

Chris Welsh decided that he wanted to experiment with this for an upcoming series that we have at our church. Chad Hovind our Senior Pastor wanted to be able to simulate something that would look like it came out of the Minority Report. After playing around with the Wii Whiteboard we got bored after about 15 minutes. It looked just like you were on a computer and that seemed kind of lame. We wanted cool. We then loaded Cooliris on the computer. Here is what it looked like when we loaded in a PowerPoint presentation from one of our recent services. All of the slides are .jpg's. Not only that but you also get to hear some of the brainstorming that is going on. Enjoy.




By the way, we already had the Wii remotes, a projector, and a computer. Chris had to make the pen which ended up costing less than $5.

I can't wait to use this for my presentations. Why do a boring slide by slide PowerPoint? Instead you can have an interactive leading presentation that gives the speaker more options and the audience more visuals. Now if I could figure out a way to play sound effects and background music at the same time with the pen in Cooliris then I would have an incredible piece of software for large group presentations.

I never thought that potty training would be such a thing that you would celebrate until I had kids. Now both of our boys are trained (accidents will happen) and this is how we did it.

Ministry Monday: Seth Godin Asks the Right Question

Seth Godin on his blog today wrote this post...

"Why am I here?"

This is a simple mantra that is going to change the way you attend every meeting and every conference for the rest of your life.

You probably don't have to be there. No gun held to your head, after all. So, why are you spending the time?

Do you have an agenda? It might be to change the agenda, or meet someone who will become a client or to learn something that will help you at work tomorrow.

Well, if that's why you're here, tell me again why you're just sitting there? If the only reason you came was to avoid the office, you need a new office. Quick, before the boss decides that for you.

Surely you have a question you can ask the speaker. Surely you have something interesting to say to the person sitting next to you. Surely you can do more than just sheepishly hand someone a business card they have no reason to save or remember or use.

If there isn't a good reason, go home. If there is, then do something. Loud, now and memorable. Productive too, please.

I don't think I could express this notion any better. If you think people are asking that question about work don't you think they are asking it about CHURCH? Every week someone walks into your church and asks the same question. They wonder the same things. At church we don't get a week off. We don't get the benefit of that someone being paid to be there and therefore they show up.

Have you ever asked yourself this question? Do you wonder why you are at church? If you are a Christ-follower then I would encourage you to do something as Seth says that is "now and memorable. Productive too, please."

Ministry Monday: Jesus has a branding problem part 4

Who is the brand manager for Jesus? Do you think Jesus needs a brand manager? Is it simply the largest denomination or is it all of the denominations and non-denominations put together? What would a brand manager tell Jesus that he needs to do?

There is a famous quote from Ghandi "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

I've never heard a statement that embodies and speaks to a horrible branding problem quite like this.

So what is the branding problem here? To me it is a lack of ownership, supervision, management, and vision to the cause of Christ. It's not about denominations or non-denominations. It's not about political parties. It's not about the worldview of most churches in the United States. This is a global problem.

There are brand managers out there for churches. Some of the mega churches in the United States have their own. The best I know of is Lawrence Swicegood. I worked with him at Fellowship Church for many years, but not even Lawrence can do this job. In fact not one person can do this on their own.

When we decide to become more like Christ and less like Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Pentecostals, Lutheran, or any other denomination then we are taking the right steps. This can only happen when you and I take ownership and spread the vision of Christ in our own lives.

I'm telling you that this branding problem that Jesus has is huge. Take one step today to make it look a little better.
