Ministry Monday: Naming your Ministry

We are starting a new ministry at our church that combines the 5th-6th graders. Kids in this age group are very unique. They are marketed to as if they were teenagers but at home treated as if they are in early elementary. Schools don't really know what to do because so many of them do things differently. These kids don't drive and don't know if they really want too but like the idea of it. It is no wonder that many of these kids have an identity crisis. They don't know who they are or who they want to be.

Why do I tell you all of this? Because this is just some of the thought that should go into naming anything, especially a ministry. Did you know that I love to name things? I even have a naming/branding consulting company (very loose term) that I have fun with. There is a process that I go through every time to name a product, company, brand, or ministry. I love the research that goes into a name. I love the life that a name takes. I love the feeling you get when you hear a name. Call me weird but there is just something about the process of creativity that gets me fired up.

So with our new ministry to 5th-6th graders we needed a new name. There were many names that came out of the process but 2 of them made the finals. The first finalist is Freedom 56. The second finalist is Exit 56. Both are fairly unique but wanted to make sure and put the 56 in any name just for clarification purposes for parents and kids. With these two names I started asking people which one they liked better. It was amazing to me to see how many adults liked the name Exit 56 and didn't really care for Freedom 56. The opposite can be said though of the kids. It was overwhelming how many kids picked Freedom over Exit. Don't get me wrong, Freedom was picked because that is what every kid wants and craves but still. Most kids when told about Exit 56 thought of a door's exit and not a highway exit and therefore didn't really like it. Adults on the other hand immediately thought of the highway exit and some even went as far as saying they wish they could get off the busy highway of life. The other extreme was when one adult asked me if they had to exit this life at age 56. I found that a bit sad and a little funny at the same time.

What is the name of our new ministry going to be called? The kids win on this one. I like adults but they are not the ones inviting their friends to this ministry. They are not the ones identifying with the name. Freedom 56 it is. What do you think? Do you like it?

Now that we have a name we have to deliver a great experience. The name will only get us so far. The thing about a name though is if we have a horrible name it will hinder us but if we have a horrible experience it will stop us. Names are very important but they will never trump the product itself.

This blog post was inspired by Tony Morgan. You can see what he thinks about names and experiences here.

Tech Thursday: The Better Question

Is Twitter asking the wrong question or is Facebook asking the wrong question? I find it interesting the difference.

Twitter asks, "What are you doing?" If I am going to answer that question I wouldn't put an interesting article, a good quote, or really any useful information for anything other than what's interesting about me.

Facebook asks, "What's on your mind?" When answering this question I have more ways to give out interesting information about others but probably not going to answer it with interesting things about me.

Which question is better? One tends to lean one way and the other seems to go the opposite. Is there a better question?

The best one I have come up with is "What do you find interesting?" but even that doesn't do it for me. Suggestions?

Ministry Monday: No One Wins.

Last week I had to do something that I hated. In fact I would rather do a funeral than what I did last week. What am I talking about? Last Thursday I was on the witness stand in a custody battle as a character witness in a messy divorce.

Divorce is bad enough, but when kids are involved then it is just horrible. Of course the ex-husband is never as bad as the ex-wife would make him out to be and the ex-wife is never innocent either. I don't know how a judge decides in cases like this. It's a true shame and there is no justice.

This hit me really hard today. So hard in fact that I took most of the day to spend with my family. We had a fun day. We saw a movie. Went to the park. Played together. Ate together. We were a family and it felt really good.

Jessica and I don't pretend to be perfect. We have spats with each other and with our kids. We made a vow though almost 10 years ago that we wouldn't even say the word divorce to each other. We won't even joke about it. Some how both Jessica and I have parents who have never been divorced. We know we are blessed to have this as a fact and hope to continue the streak for our kids as well.

I know we live in a world that is filled with divorce and custody battles. To often the battle in these cases is fought as if someone in the end wins. I am here to say though that when the war is over no one wins, no one.

Sign Wednesday: Sheet of Integrity

Here is my completed March Madness 2009 bracket. This is the official one. What do I mean by that? Each year I fill out plenty of brackets in a bunch of different leagues but I always consider one to be what I hope and think will happen. I like to call this bracket my sheet of integrity.

Of course I don't expect to get every game right but I do hope that some of the upsets above come true.

Oh yeah, if you couldn't tell, I think the Big Ten is way overrated this year and didn't deserve to get 7 teams in the tournament. I also think that the Big East is overrated but somebody has to win some games.

So what do you think? What do your brackets look like? Do you have a sheet of integrity?

By the way, the March Madness bracket is a sign. Probably one of my favorites. It's one that that changes every year and says a lot about the person who fills in the blanks. I think we need more signs like this.

Ministry Monday: Do what you love and reach people

What do you love to do? Seriously, if you the choice right now to do anything that you wanted, what would you do? Me? I would compete in some form or fashion. It's not that I have to win, even though I really enjoy winning, but I love competition. It doesn't matter what it is that I am competing for or against, I just love a great competition. I even love to watch competition happen. I really enjoy seeing how people handle pressure. There is something about seeing someone win and the emotion that it brings. There is also something about losing or seeing someone be defeated.

What if you could reach people with what you love? I don't care if it is the board game Risk or water sports. If you could help someone by what you love wouldn't you do it?

This week is one of my favorite weeks of the year. It is known as March Madness or The Big Dance. There is not another competition that comes close to it. You can root for the underdog and they really do have a shot at winning. You can see emotions that can only be brought out by last second shots. During this tournament I have laughed, cried, cursed, yelled, screamed, stomped, sweated, fist-bumped, high-fived and even hugged a stranger. Why wouldn't I want to share this? I love this.

Last year I started a little March Madness bracket challenge at my church. Why?
1. To reach out to people that I didn't know.
2. To give us something to talk about
3. To connect us in a new way
4. To have an experience
5. To be human
6. To build a bridge to talk about other things

Of course this year I have done the same. In fact I invited more people this year than any other year. Why keep something to yourself if you love it? I found people last year that I didn't know and hoping to do the same this year.

I love more than just March Madness but it is one example in my life. I also love Jesus, my wife (not sharing her), my kids (you could have them for a weekend), signs, technology, marketing, and friends.

So how about you? What do you love so much that you have to share it with someone else?

Ministry Monday: A Wake Up Call

Here is what I read this morning in the USA Today and I quote

"When it comes to religion, the USA is now land of the freelancers.

The percentage. of people who call themselves in some way Christian has dropped more than 11% in a generation. The faithful have scattered out of their traditional bases: The Bible Belt is less Baptist. The Rust Belt is less Catholic. And everywhere, more people are exploring spiritual frontiers — or falling off the faith map completely.

These dramatic shifts in just 18 years are detailed in the new American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS), to be released today. It finds that, despite growth and immigration that has added nearly 50 million adults to the U.S. population, almost all religious denominations have lost ground since the first ARIS survey in 1990.

"More than ever before, people are just making up their own stories of who they are. They say, 'I'm everything. I'm nothing. I believe in myself,' " says Barry Kosmin, survey co-author"

I have been a Pastor now for 11 years. 2 years I was on staff for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. 5 years I was on staff at Fellowship Church in Grapevine, TX. Now for almost 4 years I have been at Horizon Community Church in Cincinnati, OH. Why do I tell you this? Because after reading the above article I feel like I am failing. I feel like as a whole the church is failing to be the church. We have hit the point of people not caring. We have hit the point of people not living. Don't get me wrong, we the overall church have seen more churches grow over a weekly attendance of 2000 people on average the past 18 years then any other time in history. We have seen millions of people come to call themselves Christians or Christ-Followers. We have seen miracles and testimonies of life change. The problem is that we have also seen more people become full of apathy and distaste towards us then in years past. We have seen tons of churches start and even more churches close.

Wake Up Church! Wake up and live like you have been given life. Wake up and enjoy being who God created you to be. Wake up and start showing love like you have been given love. Wake up and give grace like there is no tomorrow. Wake up and speak truth to a nation that has lost it. Wake up! Wake UP! WAKE UP!

Excuse me, I just heard my alarm go off......

Tech Thursday: Facebook Updates

Facebook updates are coming soon. Here is the problem. The only time I log on to Facebook is when I am on my phone. I am rarely and I mean rarely on Facebook when I am on my computer. Now I know that many of you who are friends with me on Facebook will say but you post so many times everyday, it looks like you are always on there. Twitter updates my Facebook status that's why it looks this way. So why am I not on more often? Here is a nice video that explains 24 things I hate about Facebook. The video is actually 25 things but I break one of the rules all the time so I really only hate 24 things. I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks to Julian Smith for putting a video together for what I have been feeling for some time. Even with the new updates to Facebook it will not solve most of these. So if you respond to one of my status updates on Facebook I will return the favor and I do appreciate you caring enough to comment but I still wouldn't expect me to join your club, group, cause, request, or even respond to some Super Poke. I'm just sayin'.

Ministry Monday: Orange Conference Giveaways

It is better to give than to receive. Acts 20:35 (paraphrase). I love surrounding myself by people who are givers. People who give show that they have ownership over what they are giving away. Organizations that give get that not everything is about them. Conferences that give great stuff away get more people to come.

The Orange Conference has some huge giveaways. Just another reason for you to come and have a blast in Atlanta, GA from April 29th-May 1st.

Real-Fake Buildings (realfakebuildings.com )

Giving away a portable stage set for a family experience to one church. This is a $15,000 value. Churches can submit their written stories to the team onsite at the Real-Fake Buildings exhibit booth and they will partner with the staff of The reThink Group to select one lucky and deserving winner.

Clover (cloversites.com )

Giving away a website makeover to one church. This is a $1,000 value. The winner will be picked at random via drawing during the conference.

David C. Cook Publishers (davidccook.com )

Giving away resources for an adult small group study of your choice – either Crazy Love by Francis Chan or Revolutionary Parenting by George Barna – to three churches. This is a $150 - $500 value per prize. The winners will be picked at random via drawing during the conference.

Dare to be a Daniel (billygraham.com )
Giving away
Dare to Be a Daniel 13-Session Training Resource for three churches or organizations. Dare to be a Daniel is a classroom curriculum that teaches “tweens” to stand for Jesus and share their faith. These are a a value of $229 each. The winners will be picked at random via drawing during the conference.

By the Book (bythebook.com )

Giving away a child check-in system to one church. This is a $567 value. The winner will be picked at random via drawing during the conference.

I hope to see you at Orange this year.
