Tech Thursday: GodJott.com

Last night my friend Andy and I had an idea that we want to turn into a book. Both of us use Jott.com and use it quite often. We are basically evangelist for this company and they don't even know it. If you don't know what Jott.com is then read this post and this post to find out.

Our idea is to become a partner with Jott like blogger.com or zillow.com but our site is godjott.com. You see, if you jott to Blogger it goes to your blog or if you jott to Zillow then it gives you real estate information, but if you jott to godjott then you know that you are being prayed for. Of course your jott would be anonymous and you would be able to let someone know what you are going through. You would also know that your prayer was heard and someone is praying for you. We would take these jotts/prayers and turn them into a book to encourage people that they are not the only ones with struggles in their lives. Most people are going through the same things and it helps if them know that they are not the only one with this problem.

Don't worry we have already bought www.godjott.com. The site as of right now is nothing to brag about but give me some time. We have set up e-mail already and if you want to send your prayers before the Jott thing happens you can. You can e-mail us at pray@godjott.com.

So what do you think? Would you GodJott?

Ministry Monday: I PREACHED Yesterday

Yesterday was a big day for me. Besides the fact that I ran 5 miles and continue to train for a half marathon, I got to preach in the Adult Worship service. The passage that I was given was Joshua chapter 4. This chapter is all about Memorials and remembering God's greatness. God told Joshua to build a Memorial of 12 large stones for the generations to come and to remind those generations of how great God was, is, and will be in the future. Believe me when I say that it was easy to preach to parents and let them know that I can't be held responsible for all of the spiritual lessons their kids will get in life. It was easy to say that we as pastors only have one hour each week with their kids and parents can't expect us to be the all in all when it comes to God. It was easy to tell parents they must make God a priority in their lives and the lives of their kids. The hard part was listening to God's word and the words that he was speaking through me because I am a parent as well.

Every person that walked into the service yesterday received a rock. My only hope is that today they will find that rock in their car or on their dresser or somewhere and remember how great God wants to be in their life.

It felt good to preach. Most of the time I feel more like myself when I am on stage speaking in front of people than I do anywhere else. I know public speaking is the number one fear of our culture but I absolutely love it. When the sermon is posted tomorrow on our churches' website I will post a link so that if you want to hear it you can. Then you can critique it all you want. Believe me when I say I will as well.

Tech Thursday: Solid State Drives vs. Hard Disk Drives

As you know from last week's post, the MacBook Air is coming out in a couple of weeks. It is the thinnest of all notebooks. This is basically because it doesn't have an optical drive or in other words a built in CD/DVD/HD drive in it. There is one option though that made me doing a little research when looking at MacBook Air. There are 2 options when it comes to its hard drive. One option is a traditional hard disk drive that will store 80GB of info. The other option is a flash-based drive or solid state drive that will store 64GB of info. The traditional 80GB version starts at $1799 and the newer 64GB version starts at $3098.

Now why would you want to pay more for less memory?
What are the advantages of the newer hard drive?

A traditional hard drive has moving parts. It uses magnets and wheels to right the information on the disk. This is why you must be careful not to drop your laptop. You could damage those moving parts and loose all of the information that is on the disk. The newer flashed based drives have no moving parts. They are chip based and write the information in a much safer manner and if dropped less likely to be damaged. Also the newer drives access the information more quickly. Because there are no moving parts it doesn't have to "work" as hard. So a solid state drive is a bit faster, more reliable, and a little bit lighter.

Is it worth worth an additional $1300?

I am going to say NO. For $300 I can buy an external hard drive that holds 750GB and software that will back up all my information automatically. I can have the piece of mind of saving $1000 and if needed I could replace the traditional drive and still save money. Now is the future of drives flash-based? Yes and in years to come the traditional drive will become obsolete but not before I am ready for a new laptop that is thinner, more reliable, and has wireless power. I can't wait for that day either.

Sign Wednesday: Ski Patrol

In honor of this past weekend I thought that this week's Sign Wednesday should highlight skiing. What I love about skiing are the names that they give to some of the trails and slopes. Many of them can and should be names of games that you would play with kids. Others should be the names of cars, businesses, and products. I don't know if it could get any better: Great names with great signs. Enjoy.

Off Topic: I'm Alive

The Good:

  • Breckenridge is an incredible mountain to ski on. It is huge.
  • Ministry happened this weekend at church and I wasn't there.
  • I like hanging out with teenagers. I don't know why. . .
The Bad:

  • I came away with a right knee that is tender, tight, and a little twisted. The mountain won.
  • I got called, "A fat David Beckham". Something about my eyes look kind of like his but that was it.
  • The bus routes at Breckenridge stink. Free is not always good. It just means you don't complain as much.
The Ugly:

  • If you were friends of mine on Facebook then you would get to see new pictures of me on the trip. If you aren't then you don't have to see the ugly "Fat David Beckham".
I will be posting pictures and videos from the ski trip. So come back for spills, chills, and some pretty sweet tricks by students.

Now back to the regular scheduled programming. Tomorrow is Sign Wednesday and next week's 2 Min. Tuesday will be a Super Tuesday (Hint).

Free Thought Friday: Breckenridge

I leave in 20 min. to go to Breckenridge, CO. I have never been to Colorado to ski. I have skied many times but not west of the Mississippi River. I am so excited it is unbelievable. I will be there until Monday. If you are in the area or know of a great place that I should check out, let me know. I should have some good pictures and video from this weekend so stay tuned. They will probably show up on Ministry Monday because we are taking a group of students from Horizon. Just another perk of the ministry.

Tech Thursday: MacBook Air

I have been a PC guy for way to long. I am being persuaded by many of my friends that I should go Mac. Sam Luce, I know that you would be extremely happy to have someone else join the light/dark side.

So what do I think of the new MacBook Air that will be shipping in 2-3 weeks? I want one. It is that plain and that simple. I want to convert. I want to be a Mac geek. Is that bad? By the way if you don't know what I am talking about here is the new ad.

Sign Wednesday: The White Board

The White Board is a wonderful thing. I mean wonderful. It is a sign waiting to happen. A blank canvas just wanting you to write important life changing information for the world to see or at least your coworkers. Did you know that when you leave things on a White Board that you are leaving a sign behind? This could be on purpose but most of the time it is out of forgetfulness. I can't tell you how many times I have walked into a room and there was a White Board full of information. Now you can't help but read it. Why? Because it is a sign. You are trained to read signs. Please remember this when you walk out of the room because many time confidential information is often left behind as well.

On to the point. . .

Are you using your White Board to its full potential? Here is how I use mine to keep my team all on the same page.

I get the privilege of leading birth-high school at Horizon. That just basically means that I keep up with a lot of information. The way the board is broken down is into 3 separate sections for 3 separate ministries. IN is the name of our children's ministry, Crew is the name of our Junior High Ministry, and Crash is the name of our Senior High Ministry. Each section is broken down is broken down into the same weeks from above. You will notice that there are 8 slots for weeks. This lets us get at least 6 weeks ahead in our teaching series. Here are 2 pictures to give you a closer look:

Notice the children's department is doing the Elevate series Journey Below the Earth. Junior High is in a series called Order in the Court and is getting ready to do Get Ripe. Senior High is doing a vision series called Whatever it Takes. Also notice that we have printed out the logos for the different series. Why? It just looks better and gives a better feel for anyone who walks into my office. In other words it makes it a better sign. Not all things are printed though to give us flexibility on what we teach. This is very handy.

The other feature of this White Board that I really like is that it is magnetic. I have made magnets with the names of all of the primary teachers or worship leaders for each ministry. We have a team approach when it comes to teaching. I will teach in all ministries in the course of 6 weeks. This also makes it easy to fill in all of the wholes for a given weekend.

Why a White Board and not something electronic or on the web? My team is not ready. It is easy for my assistant to walk in and to know where I am going to be on any given weekend. It is easy for me to walk into my office and read the giant ever changing sign. It also lets students walk in and leave me messages which makes my day.

So if you aren't using a magnetic White Board as a sign of productivity in your office I would encourage you to. It really has made for a great transition in leadership and in organization for me.

It wasn't Excellent. . .

Yesterday wasn't excellent. No I am not talking about the Colts and the Cowboys losing, even though that wasn't excellent. I am talking about the Children's Ministry at Horizon. Have you had those days? Those days that you look back on and say at least we got through it.

Now I am not a big proponent of telling the world all of your flaws but I will let you in on what happened yesterday.

It started off like any other Sunday. Get there early to set up a school to make it look and feel like a contemporary church. We get that done and one of my paid preschool workers tells us that she is sick and is going to have to leave. Now I only have 3 paid teachers and they are there on the just in case schedule. You know a volunteer doesn't show up or you have more kids than you expect type of schedule. So I didn't think anything of it. Except the first service started and the paid worker was suppose to cover for someone else and we had 12 kids in a nursery room when we normally have 6 during this service. The 2 high school girls who normally assist are the only ones there and they have 2 kids who are being uncontrollable. Normally my assistant would go in and save the day but she is having to cover another class because that teacher is not there. I find out about the situation when I hear that a family is leaving because the room is so out of control. That's right, a family left yesterday because of the ministry in which I oversee. I normally get stories of kids bringing their parents to church. Yesterday I got kids causing their parents to leave church. The only saving grace out of the deal was that I caught the parents before they left and invited them back to the next service and they actually came back. Then yours truly got to go hang out in the nursery for the rest of the first service.

Now if that wasn't bad enough, I had a child escape out of their preschool classroom at our second service. This was not the first time this child has escaped and he really like to run and hide. He is an every week kid and we had put some of our best teachers in place. We had given them information that he likes to get out and explore. I thought I had extra measurements of security and policies in place to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen and it did.

There were other areas that weren't excellent yesterday but why hang all my dirty laundry out on one blog post.

You see when you think that you are doing really well and your ministry is growing and reaching people, then you have days like yesterday. Days that aren't excellent. Days that seem like they will never end.

Thank you God that you show grace on days like yesterday. Thank you God that you still work when we make mistakes and policies fail. Thank you God for moving in the lives of families when it seems like we just get in the way. Thank you God. . .

Free Thought Friday: Trespassers Will Be Baptized

Did you go to high school with someone who was really ambitious, smart, and had everything together? I mean you know the type. The person who always got better grades than you did. Was the president of something while you were the vice president. They went to Harvard while you went to a small college in your home state to play a sport. Did you have someone like this?

I am proud to say that I did. Of course at the time I didn't take the opportunity to push myself as hard as she did. I didn't even take the opportunity to become closer friends and should have. I do know that she made me think and on occasion even made me laugh. By all means I know she laughed at me enough. God puts people in our path and I think it is up to us to take advantage of those opportunities. I was to immature to know that back then.

Who am I talking about? Her name is Elizabeth Emerson Hancock but I know her as Emy. She graduated from Harvard and was Miss Massachusetts in 1998. Not bad for a girl who grew up in Richmond, KY and graduated from Madison Central.

Why do I tell you about her? She is coming out with a book. The title is Trespassers Will Be Baptized. It will release in June but you can pre-order it now on amazon.com.

Here is book the description:

Book Description
Growing up Southern and Baptist in Eastern Kentucky, Elizabeth Hancock's world revolved around Sunday School, foreign missions projects, revival meetings and of course, the Kentucky Wildcats, who "glorified God through their goal-shattering, soul-shattering play." Hancock chronicles her childhood misadventures with sardonic wit, detailing her and her sister Meg's mischievous - if harmless - abuses of power (stealing Guess jeans from the Africa donation box, or hawking backyard swimming pool baptisms during her neighborhood's annual yard sale) and lovingly recalling the wisdom imparted by her long-suffering parents as they ministered to their unruly flock. TRESPASSERS WILL BE BAPTIZED marks the arrival of a talented new voice in a coming of age story that is by turns comical and affecting.

Congratulations Emy on writing your first book. I am proud to say that I know you now and knew you when.

Tech Thursday: The best of CES 2008

I know that today is not Thursday but it feels like it to me. I have been out of commission since Tuesday afternoon with a stomach flu. Not pretty but I am back to at least give what I think we the highlights of CES 2008.

5. GPS goes Internet with the Dash Express

This handy little device gives real time traffic, directions, and lets you search the internet all at once. Yes Google has maps for mobile but I don't want my phone screen to be that large and my wife would prefer real GPS over the "My Location" feature. This device will sale for $599. A little pricey but give it a year.

4. High Tech Gutter Cleaner

When you think of CES you don't think of gutter cleaners but what about one that is a wireless remote control one that will clean 60 feet in 10 minutes. Maybe I just really need to clean my gutters right now and don't want to have to climb up and down a ladder a hundred times but this is impressive. It is also has a really cool name: iRobot Looj. This will sale for $99-$169. That is a lot cheaper and more fun than installing those gutter guards.

3. Fabric PC of the Future

This little beauty is made by Fujitsu on their e-paper or flexible display paper. So technically not fabric but it folds and works like fabric. The idea is that if you wanted a bigger screen that you would just unfold it more and wham you now have a bigger screen. Of course this is only a concept right now and they don't expect it to hit the public for 5 years. I would love to have a shirt that was also a video display. Now that would be awesome.

2. Blu-Ray wins

If you didn't hear Blu-Ray is going to be the disc of the next generation. Years ago Sony lost the battle to VHS but win this one. How do you know? Not by they crowd or the 103" plasma or even the name. Warner Bros. studios came out and said that they are only producing their movies on Blu-Ray and not HD DVD. So if you bought a HD DVD player I am sorry.

1. 150 inch Plasma

Earlier this week I said that I would take the 108 in LCD by Samsung. This statement is still true but who could turn down a 150 inch plasma by Panasonic. Last year Panasonic was trumped because their 103 inch plasma was outdone. This year they wanted to make sure that didn't happen. There is no price on this TV yet but the 103 inch little brother sold for $69,000. I am betting six figures easy. By they way if you buy a HDTV today more than likely the best quality that you can get is 1080. This set has a resolution of over 4000. Now that is impressive.

For 2008 I thought I would try the video blogging deal. How am I going to do it? What is it going to feel like? What is the purpose? Watch this and find out for yourself.

Another hope is that all of the running I am doing for this half marathon training will show in the clips over several weeks.

Ministry Monday: Back to Work

Did your church take Sunday December 30th off? I know most churches didn't, in fact I only know of one church that did, mine. Yes we didn't have church on December 30th. Why? Because it was a gift from our elders and executive board. Because it is OK not to have church every week. Yes I said that. Because it gives us pastors a nice break to see family for Christmas and New Year's. Because we can. Pick any one of those answers. They are all true.

Do you think it is right? Do you think a church should do this? If you had the chance to have church on December 30th or not, which would it be?

Now let's get honest for just a moment. If you did have church on the 30th, didn't you have your 3rd, 4th, or 5th string in. I mean I am willing to bet the Senior Pastor didn't preach and if you had vacation days you took it. Leaving behind the person who doesn't know how to delegate or has no one to delegate too. I mean I not saying but I am saying. . . Was your church half way done on December 30th because Christmas was so big and extravagant that it was an after thought anyway? I am willing to say that if you took a straw poll the answer would be yes. Is it worth doing a church service half way?

I know your answer. . . But Matt it gives these people the opportunity to lead or preach or serve and they wouldn't get to anyway. Or you would say, but Matt what about new families that came that week and to think that we would have missed them if we didn't have church. Or you would say, but Matt our committees wouldn't let us even if we wanted to because they have more power than God at our church.

Do you think those answers are good enough to put an half way service on just because. I am really glad we had December 30th off. I am also glad that we got back to work this past Sunday and started with all new series. Nothing brings in the new year like a great new series.

Engadget knows CES

If you didn't know the biggest and most exciting gadget expo started yesterday. It is called CES and it is covered by many sites but none better than Engadget.com. From what I understand there are 10 guys on the floor of the exhibit hall looking at every device. They have already covered the big news of Warner going with Blu-Ray instead of HD DVD and that Target may be going that way as well. There are some other great stories coming out as well but I thought I would take a moment and highlight some of the coolest gadgets that I have noticed up to this point. These are in random order:

1. The LG Watch Phone.

I would love to be James Bond and this is the first step.

2. Sony's Rolly: a robot/music player/really cool stage prop

Who really knows what this thing is but I bet you that it will be given away at a 2009 Children's Conference if Reggie Joiner as anything to say about it.

3. Sharp 108in LCD: available to buy in 2008

What guy doesn't dream of having this in their family room? It would be my room, but that is even better.

So there are three devices for now. Many more to come this Tech Thursday for sure. If you are keeping count, I have 3 things on my 30th birthday list already.

Also if you are wondering why I didn't give Apple any love. They don't come to this. They are to good for this. They have their own show called MacWorld. I am looking forward to that as well, but until then. . .

Free Thought Friday: Half Marathon?

This year I have decided that I am going to run a half marathon. For those of you that don't know that is 13.1 miles. Why a half and not a full? Well you have to start somewhere and my thought is that I will do a half this year and see how it goes. I am training with my dad and he has run in half marathons before so I feel pretty confident that I can do it. I mean come on, I played soccer in college and was in great shape and never officially ran 13 miles in a row but I know it had to be close some days.

Here are the problems with the goal:

1. I don't really like to run just to run.
2. I play futsal and indoor soccer now but still feel the nagging of old ankle and knee injures. To many to explain but I feel like I am getting old. That's ashame.
3. It's been really cold in Cincinnati and I hate running on treadmills.

Here are the positives with the goal:
1. Quality time with my dad
2. A since of accomplishment
3. A few lbs. might just come off
4. Disciplining myself to run will help in other areas of my life
5. I get a race t-shirt

So there you go. The positives out way the negatives and I will keep you informed on how it is going. Right now I am only running 1 mile everyday. Next week I go to 1.5 miles a day or 2 miles a day. The race is in April so I am taking my time and trying to got he steady route and not my normal let's take the hill approach. Look at me growing and maturing and many of you said I couldn't. Well. . . HA!

Tech Thursday: It's a Bad Day. . .

It's a bad day when you buy a video camera on eBay for Christmas and the only thing that you can get off of it is audio.

It's a bad day when you e-mail the seller of the video camera and eBay tells you that the seller doesn't speak English and they are not going to translate the e-mail for you. Of course the listing was in English and said it was in excellent condition.

It's a bad day when your beloved cell phone quits working because the reset button shorts out on you.

It's a bad day when you didn't buy the insurance and the warranty is out and the only suggestion they have for you is to buy a new phone.

It's a bad day when you didn't backup any of the information on your phone that just broke for last 3 months.

It's a bad day when the new to you (used) tablet pc that you were so looking forward to using isn't going to work out because it only has 256 mb of ram and you can't upgrade it.

It's a bad day when you forget to take your XM radio out of your wife's car and you have to listen to ESPN radio on AM in Cincinnati.

It's a bad day when you main computer isn't recognizing your SD slot and therefore you can't get the videos and pictures that you took onto your computer.

It's a bad day when all of the beloved technology that you rely on and that makes your life better most days fails you.

So welcome to my bad day.

Sign Wednesday: Brooklyn Houses of Worship

Is there a better way of starting off the New Year and Sign Wednesday than with church/houses of worship signs from Brooklyn, NY? Thanks to the Little Pastor for bringing these to my attention. There are way to many to post on my site but the rest can be found here. The ones that I found most interesting or just plain wrong are below. Let's see if you can figure out the good from the bad and the just plain ugly.

You mean I get the fun of Coney Island and Deliverance all behind that garage door?

I like that they are incorporated. That's important.

Bibleway beats Straitway 6 ways till Sunday.

2 for the price of 1. Now that is a deal.

Eye Spy with my little eye an "R". Do you? I didn't think so.

Happy New Year and New Line Up

Happy New Year! As many of you go and make your New Year's resolutions, goals, or just visit your priorities today I wish you the best. I am not going to make a big stance against any of this type of action. We both know that New Year's resolutions normally don't last so I hope that this year is a great year for you and your family. I hope that you are moved to the point of change and that you are changed to the point of success.

This year I will have a new blogging line up. It is something that I have been thinking about for some time and it is time to implement. Isn't that the case with a lot of other things in your life and mine. I digress. . . The new line up will look like this:

Ministry Mondays: faith is huge part of my life and I can't get away from that
2 minute Tuesdays: 2 min. of video each week for your watching pleasure
Sign Wednesdays: I am a sign geek and that is OK.
Tech Thursdays: technology should improve our lives
Free Thought Fridays: I have to have some way of ranting and rambling
The weekends are wide open.

Does this mean I am going to post everyday? I can't promise that but I can tell you that I will stay focused. If something out of the blue comes up then I will make sure and give you a heads up.

So to a new year, a new line up, and turning the big 3 0 this year.
