Ministry Monday: 80/20 90/10 and the new 65/35 Rule

Do you know the 80/20 rule? How about the 90/10 rule? There is even a new study out by Gallop that would start a new rule that could be called the 65/35 rule.

What in the world am I talking about?

The 80/20 rule states that once your facility gets to 80% perceived fullness on a frequent basis (ie more than Easter and Christmas) then your church will not grow. You will not be able to fill that 20% unless you add another service or of course build a bigger facility. Then you have the other 80/20 rule or the Pareto Principle that states that 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes or 80% of your sales comes from 20% of your clients. I prefer the church rule over the business rule but I digress...

The 90/10 rule states that you don't have control over 10% of your life (ie red lights, other people's behavior towards you, your furnace breaking down) but you do have control over 90% and you should take advantage of the 90% and quit stressing over the 10%. Then I read today the 90/10 rule for Twitter that states that 90% of your communication on Twitter should be of a giving nature and 10% and only 10% should be of a selfish nature or taking nature. By the way, this is a good rule for life and not just for Twitter.

The new 65/35 rule was created today by Gallop. It states that 65% of people in the United States consider religion an important part of their daily life and 35% do not. Gallop released the study and you can see the results here. Gallop even breaks down the states that are the most religious and the states that are not. Mississippi came in first with 85% of the people saying religion is very important and Vermont came in last with 42%. Ohio was middle of the pack and the nations average at 65%.

Here is the good news, the opportunity, and the indiffernt.

Good news: My church is hitting the 80/20 church rule and we are thinking something is going to have to change to help reach the 35%.

The Opportunity: As pastors and ministers we still have 35% of the nation that acknolege they need help.

The Indifferent: I thought the 65/35 rule was for Twitter. Now I know I should be following the 90/10 rule and I am working on that.

Our church is playing with a 95/5 rule, and probably experiencing some negative growth because of it.
We had a 70/30 service and a 40/60 service that they combined to one service, which is now probably 95/5. But they also added an experimental contemporary service at another site that is at 105% and they have to turn people away every week. They also converted two 60/40 Sunday schools into one 100/100 Sunday school that I don't want to go to anymore.

And they can't figure out what to do exactly.
